Bustards v Swanage Dolphins

June 10th, 2023 – Match, Result
Tough day at the office in the heat, against the unbeaten Swanage Dolphins.
Tony, Muriel & Ivan sadly didn’t play very well & lost 9-19.
Rosemary, Alan & Geoff put in a great performance & won 18-16. This is the first rink the Dolphins have lost all season, so very well done.
Overall the match score was 27-35 to the Dolphins. Bustards 2 points, Dolphins 4. We are now comfortably in third place, but even at this early stage of the season, it looks like a straight fight between the Dolphins & Lyndhurst for the title.
Next match is at home to the Bournemouth Buffalos on 24th June. All spectators are very welcome.

Lyndhurst v Bustards

June 3rd, 2023 – March, Result
The Bustards travelled to Lyndhurst for their top of the table clash. On a perfect day for bowls, on a lovely consistent green, both our teams played really well, before going down in two close, well fought encounters.
Tony, Ivan & Cathy lost 19-23. Without conceding a 7 & a 6 in the space of 3 ends mid match, this match would surely have been won.
Rosemary, Lewis & Geoff came back brilliantly from 5-15 down, before eventually going down 19-21.
Lyndhurst won the match overall 38-44. Lyndhurst 6 points, Downton 0.
Next week we are home to top of the league Swanage Dolphins. All spectators welcome.

Super Bowling at Fordingbridge

Wednesday 24th May
The eighteen Downton Bowlers received a warm a welcome at Fordingbridge BC. The scene was set by the Captains as an intro, with a warning from Alan Waters that the green will feel like bowling on ice compared to our pedestrian Green.
Although it took some getting use to, the Downton players seemed to enjoy the challenge, We won three rinks, the best being a win of 28-6 by Martin Scammell, Colin Morris and Skip Cathy Dean. The overall score was 116-80, 3rinks each.
The day was rounded off with a drink, tea and biscuits and much banter

Week four in the Men’s New Forest League

This week saw the Men play two New Forest Matches. On Tuesday 16th, we went to the coast to fulfil a rearranged fisture against Milford -on -Sea. The evening was beautiful as we played with the Needles in our sights. Unfortunately the Jack was not in our sights as we went down on all four rinks, hence losing 8-0. Just shows we are vulnerable.
On the other hand our scheduled home match against Verwood went a little better. The game finished with a shots score of 66-64 in our favour, and six points to 2. This is thanks to the two winning rinks of Colin, Steve, John; and Ivan, Simon and Charles. This puts us up to second in the League, but we have a game in hand on most Clubs.

Bustards v Bournemouth Broncos

After yesterday’s thunder storm, which left the green waterlogged, Patrick did a wonderful job this morning, to get the green playable.  Today, the weather was warm, dry & sunny, a lovely day for bowls.

The Bustards took their third win in a row, with Rosemary, Alan & Geoff winning convincingly 31-11, with 20 of those shots coming in the last 8 ends.

Tony, Paul T & Cathy drew 17-17, just missing out on the victory by a couple of centimetres.

Overall the Bustards won 48-28 to maintain second spot in the league.

Next week is a bye week. The following week we are away to Lyndhurst

Poole Park ‘D’ v Bustards

The Bustards took the sun with them and made the long trek to Poole Park ‘D’ looking for a second victory.
This was achieved by Tony, Paul & Cathy winning their rink 22-13, winning 8 ends to the opponents’ 10.
All three of our team played really well; scoring a 7, a 5 and two 3’s really helped the cause.
On the other rink, Rosemary, Alan & Ivan sadly went down 13-18. Three bad ends late on conceding two 3’s and a 4 did the damage. On this rink we won 10 ends to the opponents 8.
Overall, the Bustards won 35-31 and are now second in the league.
Next up: Bournemouth Broncos at home next Saturday with a 10am start – all spectators welcome.
